Am I eligible for the MCCQE part 1 exam?

The Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part 1 is an exam that must be passed in order to proceed to graduate studies in Canada. Starting in 2019, all medical graduates can take MCCQE 1 exam, regardless of whether they graduated from a Canadian or international medical school. The institution responsible for conducting standardized examinations to assess and evaluate medical graduates and physicians is the Medical Council of Canada (MCC; Conseil médical du Canada, CMC).

Availability of MCCQE Part 1

The MCCQE Part 1 exam has changed, and here’s the good news if you are taking the exam in 2021. The MCC currently provides more opportunities to take the MCCQE 1 exam. Now you can take the MCCQE 1 exam in Canada and internationally in more than 80 countries through Prometric Center. With Update MCC Information, you’ll have more chances, up to five times annually, to sit for the MCCQE Part 1 exam.

However, we are trying to address one question today, Am I eligible to take the MCCQE 1 exam? To help you find the answer to the question in this article, we will cover three admission options for the MCCQE Part 1 exam:

1. If you are applying as a medical student

You can take this test during the last year of clinical school. You are qualified to apply as long as 15 months before your date of graduation. Approved application has a year qualification window, so if your application is approved you have a year qualification window to schedule your exam. During this qualification window, You can schedule an appointment six months before the date of the first exam.

2. If you are applying as a graduate:

First, you need to go to application and eligibility to verify that your school of medicine meets the requirements through your physiciansapply.ca account, and after your medical school is eligible, you’ll be required to provide an official identity along with other required documents.

You can apply if your medical degree/diploma is currently being verified or has been successfully verified.

3. If you are applying as International Medical Graduates (IMGs):

As an International Medical Graduates (IMGs), you should make sure that your medical school is recognized by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) or the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) (in the U.S.); or Identified by a Canada Sponsor Note in the World Directory of Medical Schools, or Accredited as a U.S. School of Osteopathic Medicine before applying for MCCQE part 1 exam. However, if your school does not make it to CACMS or LCME, then the candidate has to go through a vetting process and present the proper credentials and documentation to verify the medical degree before taking the MCCQE1 exam.

Once you book an appointment, you will receive a confirmation email from the Prometric centre. A confirmation email from Prometric will be sent to you, which will include information such as:

  • Scheduled date
  • Status of the appointment
  • Location
  • Confirmation number

We recommend that you wait until you have gone through the MCC Objectives and you have reviewed them completely. Make sure you have reviewed them completely prior to sitting for the MCCQE 1 exam and booking an appointment.
